Our team recently received training on the Choices and Changes medical education program offered by Health Sciences North.
The workshop is a chronic disease self-management initiative to provide clinicians with efficient and effective tools to help them motivate patients’ health behavior changes and adherence to treatment plans. Choices and Changes provides clinicians with an opportunity to explore their own beliefs about the change process and to test out these beliefs against the empirical literature that has developed during the past twenty years. The program also provides the clinician with specific strategies that can be utilized within the highly time limited constraint of the typical office visit. The Choices and Changes workshop is based on theories of education, communication, the Stages of Change Model, Social Cognitive Theory, Self-Determination Theory, Motivational Interviewing and the Conviction and Confidence Model. Participants learn specific strategies and skills to apply these models in the setting of brief medical office visits.
