Telemedicine Registered Practical Nurse

Our Registered Practical Nurse schedules and coordinates all telemedicine appointments- including individual and group sessions.

Telemedicine appointments can be made with a variety of specialists including Psychiatrists, Endocrinologists, Cardiologists, Respirologists, Dermatologists and Pediatricians.

Using innovative technology, OTN streamlines the health care process, while also expanding the way the medical community interacts with each other and with patients. An independent, not-for-profit organization, OTN is funded by the Government of Ontario. OTN offers many programs including the TeleDerm and eConsult programs.
Patients are referred to specialists by their family physician and are seen onsite at the City of Lakes clinic via OTN’s videoconferencing technology.

The role of the telemedicine coordinator (TMC) is to organize video conferencing appointments between patient and specialist. The coordinator is responsible for contacting the appropriate specialist as requested by the referring physician and coordinates an appropriate appointment time which fits the schedule of the patient specialist and TMC. Once a date has been established the appointment is entered electronically into the Ncompass software which bridges both sites. The coordinator often becomes part of the appointment to assist the specialist with the physical examination and to answer any questions that arise regarding the patient. The TMC is also responsible for handling the recommendations as set out by the specialist, lab requests, starting new medications or changing doses ordering tests, etc. The TMC will notify the referring physician of the recommendations. The role is always evolving and new innovative ways of gaining access to specialist are arising. The TMC must learn new software programs in order to share the patient information with the specialist and relay the recommendations to the referring physician.

The telemedicine coordinator is also responsible for non-clinical appointments. The coordinator will find educational events that will suit the patient’s and organization’s needs. The TMC will call patients and promote the upcoming events and offer the class in the most appropriate geographical location.
