Pneumococcal Disease Prevention

City of Lakes FHT Registered Nurse, Sandy Tegel, offered a series of group patient presentations over the summer regarding Pneumococcal Vaccines.

Pneumococcal disease is a bacterial infection that is the leading cause of bacterial pneumonia, blood infections, ear infections and meningitis. Thousands of older adults die and many more are hospitalized from pneumococcal disease every year. Two vaccines are available including Pneumovax and Prevnar.

Immunization experts have said that getting both vaccines offers the best protection against pneumococcal disease. The two vaccines should be given at specific intervals for healthy adults and it’s important to follow proper guidelines.

Patients were provided with information on options depending on their medical history.
